Functional Medicine Assessment – 2

Just to recap for what the doctor shared during our first appointment. Dr Shirin Jacob wanted my hubby to work on his mental health & state down his daily diet for her assessment too.

Mental health – create a safe area / room that he could meditate and achieve his mind & spirit’s Zen state. A place that he probably could have some plants, water fountain, music & etc. Find a phrase / sentence / chanting / prayers that he could instantly calm his mind via repetition.

Diet – Continue for casein, gluten, sugar, soy free food. Eat only food that harvest with its original state. He could have Avocado as fruit exception and fish for meat exception.

His blood test showed that he was actually lack of Iron (low hemoglobin too) and excess of Vit D. These deficiencies actually caused him a lot of fatigue. So he tuned down his Vit D supplements and had some iron instead.

After some talking, Doctor still emphasized on his emotional issue to promote his mind, body & spiritual health.  She encouraged him to stay away all negativity and throw away all negative thoughts and possible stop seeing doctors who he felt stress of. I was so grateful that she could ever mentioned this. I really admire her way of treating her patient out of “traditional” or conventional way.

In fact, we met our oncologists (surgical & medical) before this. My hubby had feedback about his diarrhea and loose stool issue, the oncologist then told him for the possible recurrence and she wanted him to do the colonscopy by next week. He was pale and lost after meeting the doctor. I was so shocked for the repeat of colonscopy where we just had it 1 & half months ago. Is that truly a necessary procedure to do? I don’t think so. I am still feeling a lots of “sales act ” from the doctors, their feedback for cancer patients is as simple as recurrence possibility and thus arrange for all sorts of procedure to check. It is so suffocating. I believe my hubby’s body would definitely complaint too. Doctors always tell us, if you don’t do/check, it might be too late for the tumour will spread to your other body parts. Our reply : Yup, then no choice. As even we do conventional treatment, the tumour too will get spreaded. No one could guarantee for the tumour will not spread, right? Then they will just keep mum. See, no one could guarantee anything but we, our body is the one that bear all suffering and casualties. I rather to believe stopping the cancer environment for it has no reason to grow.

Again, we told the doctors we need to rest our body for we have to deal with the side effects from the surgery. We need a peace, of our mind and body. Those treatments are not what we need, by listening to our body. So, we postponed the following appointment to not know when. We were so relieved after making this decision.

We will be meeting Dr Shirin Jacob next month and she will schedule another blood test after 3months. We are now busy for a common room renovation. We were so looking forward to it. Safe house.

Let’s repeat this. I am safe, my body is safe. I am well, my body is well.

Functional Medicine Assessment – 1

We read and googled about Functional Medicine Assessment prior to the appointment with the doctor. We were excited to know how the assessment will help in determine our primary problem in our body which we will be able to work on and improve from there.

The concept of Functional Medicine is they deal with a matrix of whole body’s function including mental, physical and spiritual wellness that correlates the body’s hormone, immunity / inflammatory status, cell energy, gastrointestinal condition, detoxification ability and nutritional facts. The conventional doctor diagnosis will be knowing the illness by tracking the symptoms and prescribed medicine. But we know that taking a paracetamol might ease the headache symptom for a while but the cause of headache might be far more complex than we thought.

I read about Dr Shirin Jacod, she is a famous women gynae in Singapore who made a profession switch to Functional Medicine and I am glad to have met her in person after 2 month’s waiting.

She asked the purpose of our visit and what/how we like her to help. She assessed my hubby’s medical history including how he was born, things happened at his 10, 20 & 30 years old that greatly affected his emotion or health. She identified my hubby’s main cause of the illness is his mental health and he has the so-called cancer character. His mental health will be his physical health. Due to his long-term bad diet habit, he has the leaking gut issues that deteriorates after the cancer treatment. Leaking gut will bring us a lot of health issues and you may google to know more about it.

She wanted my hubby to tackle his mental health by giving him several suggestion including counseling session. She too comment that due to his health condition now, she would like my hubby to have diet with only RICE (brown rice, wild rice, black rice & red rice) & VEGETABLES that cooked or blended for easier digestion.

  • No gluten
  • No raw & juicing
  • No casein / soy
  • No sugar & fruits (small amount)
  • No diary
  • Avoid potato, eggplant, tomato, bell peppers & chili

When her assistant notified her for the last 15mins, she wanted us to share what we learn & has she helped so far. She lastly commented about chemotherapy. She encouraged my hubby to go for chemotherapy with the reason that last stage of cancer could spread very fast and it will buy him some golden time. But if his innerself is reluctant & afraid of more harm that will bring to his health, then bear with the outcome and just forget about it.

She had been very straight forward to his condition and I think we have not wasted our time. My hubby cried during the session (Dr Jacod too) when he shared about what he wanted to have if he granted to.

She recommended supplementation but she encouraged that we buy it at online stores. She was so kind to give us half price of consulation fee after knowing that we actually are unemployed now. She is 57 years old and she shared that she wants to spend her last 15years (by her estimation after assessing her family history) by helping people to heal holistically.

So we went for the blood test to know the nutritional profile & to meet her 2 weeks later. We got to do some homework to state down the daily food intake/emotion & exercise. Prior to that, we already scheduled a counseling session which my hubby is so looking forward to. He needs guidance, to achieve a better mental health. He felt so much better after meeting with her. I am thankful for he is more confident now for what to do next.

So no more juicing………………….. Oh lastly, she recommended that we read the book – The China Study. I read with lots of surprise.

I will update again.

Tackling Sleep disorder

Sleep disorder, could potentially bring us serious problem. I am now understand why our Chinese physician would check whether we eat well or sleep well.

If you can’t sleep well, you definitely don’t eat well & vice versa.

So stories begins from 6weeks ago when my hubby started to lose more weight, lethargic, reduced activities, emotional, poor appetite and looked pale. He was dealing with all discomforts including the diarrhea & frequent urination as side effect from surgery. He thought that he had indigestion problem or might be the side effects from the stoma reversal but I felt something just not right.

So I stayed out very late during a night and checked my hubby out at around 12-1am. I saw that he sat on the floor with extreme tiredness trying to sleep by doing some stretching. He then told me that after the stretching he still had to do few sessions of the Ultra long magnetic wave chair to ease his back pain so he could fall sleep.

I was so worried but also angry for he did not share for his back pain & sleep problem. He thought it would be getting better but it was not.

We had an intensive discussion for his condition.

His sleep was disrupted not only by the back pain but also bloatedness. The gas that trapped inside his intestine was also the culprit that causing a lot of discomfort to his body. He then did not eat a lot or can’t really eat too. There was like a gas eruption after he ate and those gasses were trapped as he could not pass the gas or burp it out too. I felt his stomach and I could really feel a lot of gas running.

His blood pressure was also elevated. Before I found out all of these, we had one horrible incident that he was so bloated after eating cheese & roti Prata, he started to have vomiting on the next day. All these symptoms was just like before his diagnosis and to our horror we thought we will be heading back to A&E again. But we chose to seek help from normal GP doctor where the doctor eased his vomiting with an injection and prescribed some colic & gas medicine.

We were devastated by looking at his condition that seemed worsening.

So what we do? Ok.

First, he has to sleep well because if his sleep quality is so bad, he will not eat well. If he could not eat well, he could not absorb enough nutrient neither meeting enough calories. Not enough calories, he will continue to lose weight. His health will be deteriorated after sometimes which is alarming to both of us.
So gas problem. We met up with his aunt who runs the health promoting company. She suggested that we take the Vita Cleanse which consists of psyllium husk, onion, dandelion root, Spirulina, plantago, cloves & etc that helped in intestinal debunking.  3 to 4times a day to ease the soften stool problem as well as his gas issue. She explained that his intestine had too much of bad bacteria and toxin that needed to be cleansed. After clearing up, the good bacteria can work more effectively for food digestion. We immediately tried it for the first day we got it. Thank God his gas problem reduced and he could pass the gas out. He had less toilet trips with hardened stool. We checked back his colons copy photo. We could see a lot of mucus building up around the colon. I attached the photos.

So next, back pain. We added the comforter to his mattress. He practiced some backpain stretching and I urged him to go out walking or Qi Gong practicing as usual. Muscle has to be trained and we just have to continue to be active. lying on bed would only make things worse.

We also just tried the essential oil after friends recommendation. We went to the shop and just within 3mins my hubby started to farting, nonstop! The aroma just made the wind/gas moved. Haha. It was truly embarrassed and we apologized to the boss. But we were so happy to know that the aroma of these essential oil helped his gas passing.

We made a few combination of essential oils but we love the Bergamot plus lavender. We massaged for each other and the kids too. We truly amazed by its effect of relaxing and pain relieving. He didn’t really feel the backpain and he could really sleep better.

Thankfully after all these efforts, he started to eat more and his weight drop has stopped and maintained as of now. He is 170cm height, weighted 55kgs. We target to increase weight for another 5kgs. He physically feel the best at 62-65kgs though. But his muscle level has gained higher 35% in body composition.

Phew, these weeks were really taxing but it is really worthwhile.

Stay calm & cheer, key to our troubleshooting.

Our next things to do, do functional assessment & schedule a counselling session.
